The One Number That Matters
Every business has one number that best indicates its health. Finding it and watching it changes how you operate.
There are hundreds of metrics a business can track. Revenue, profit margin, customer acquisition cost, churn rate, NPS, pipeline value, fulfillment accuracy, cash conversion cycle. All of them are useful in some context. But for any given business at any given stage, there is one number that matters most.
Finding Your One Number
The one number is the metric that, if it moves in the right direction, everything else improves. For a SaaS company, it might be monthly recurring revenue or net revenue retention. For a distributor, it might be order-to-ship time. For a professional services firm, it might be utilization rate. The exercise of identifying it forces you to articulate what really drives the business.
The System Connection
Once you know your one number, the next question is: can your systems tell you what it is right now? Not in a week after someone pulls a report. Right now, in real time, from a dashboard you can check on your phone. If the answer is no, that is the first system problem to solve.
Avoid Vanity Metrics
The one number should not be a vanity metric. Website traffic is a vanity metric unless your business model directly monetizes page views. Social media followers is a vanity metric unless it converts to pipeline. The one number should connect to revenue, profitability, or customer value in a clear, traceable way.
Reviewing Against the Number
At Infraxio, we review our one number weekly. Every team meeting starts with it. Every strategic decision is evaluated against its impact on it. That discipline keeps the entire organization focused on the thing that actually matters.
